The National Parks System and Columbia University agree - wine raspberry or wineberry stands (Rubus phoenicolasius) may resemble raspberry bushes but they are invasive shrubs that take hold quickly. Members of the rose family, they have long prickly red canes and form dense, impenetrable brush.
Learn more about these "invaders" that are crowding out native species at the Jay Property in Rye at:

"THREATS
Rubus phoenicolasius can rapidly form dense monotypic thickets that crowd out native vegetation. Since the fruits are tasty, it is often not recognized as a problem. Copious fruit production and subsequent bird-dispersal contribute to its spread across the landscape. "

"ECOLOGICAL THREAT
Wineberry is a vigorous grower and can form dense thickets covering large areas, displacing many native plants in the process. Wineberry poses a threat to the native plants that grow in forest, field, stream and wetland edge habitats, open woods, and savannas and prairies."
