This is a narrow place in the St. Lawrence River This view is from the north side looking south and a little east. Seasons change quickly in Canada. This picture is autumn. The day before was summer and the next morning it snowed. We don't get quick service like that in Tennessee.
Early explorers come upstream in the St. Lawrence estuary and ran into swift currents right about here. Sailing ships don't sail against currents very well, so I guess they just stopped and built Quebec. A narrow place in a river with bluffs on the shore made an easy place to defend with old fashioned black-powder cannons, and smooth bore muskets. The current would slow an attacking ship, making it an easy target.
