Joseph has a wife and nine children. He walks with the aid of a splint and still supports his mother Anna who is now 100 years old and blind. He helps support his large family by running the shop that he set up after acquiring a loan from HelpAge International. He says now they are all better off financially. He said: ?The recent drought that affected some people did not affect my family since I have this business. If I hadn?t received the loan, I don?t know how we would have survived.?
Joseph also gives something back to his community by being a peer educator. He received training from HelpAge and now passes on his knowledge to others. He explains: ?We go round to people?s houses to talk about HIV and AIDS. We offer assistance and advice to caregivers about the disease and how to prevent them from contracting it. For example, by wearing gloves when necessary?.

Hannah is in her late 60s and during her life has raised 16 children by herself, plus two grandchildren. She has managed to put them all through school and vocational training. She said: ?It has been really tough taking care of my grandchildren since I do not have a steady income or a pension.?
Hannah has to work extremely hard to provide for her family but was glad that she was picked to receive a HelpAge loan to buy a cow. ?The cow I got has helped us immensely by providing us with milk for consumption and milk for selling,? she said. ?I am able to feed the children and sell about two litres a day."
Having faced so many difficulties in her own life, Hannah never hesitates to help others. She has joined a group of older peer educators, trained by HelpAge, and now teaches her peers and children about HIV and AIDS. ?I decided to become a peer educator because I feel confident standing in front of people and talking about HIV and AIDS. I also reach out to people in need.?
