My step-dad and mom's wedding rings. My mom gave them to me when she came to visit last weekend because she just couldn't hold on to them anymore, understandably. There is a lot of pain still brewing between these two circles.
I thought I'd lost my mom's the other day, the one on my pinky. I literally broke down on the phone with her, tearing through my apartment. I knew why it hurt so much, thinking that a ring without meaning was gone. It means so much, too much. I remember sobbing out the words, "It's all I have left." Because it is. It's all I have left. Luckily, I found the ring laying on the floor not far from where I was tearing everything to shreds looking for it.
Engraved inside both are the sayings they used to recite to each other all the time. The inside of my step-dad's says "I love you more." and the inside of my mom's says, "No, I love you more."

It's not every day that you sheer off a white gold diamond wedding ring with a pair of bolt cutters so when you do you'd better get in a few shots. This isn't the result of split-up but rather Hyun Mi's fingers swelled so much during pregnancy that her ring couldn't be removed prior to delivery. After having tried every other ring removal method on the net we were left with no other option.
I found the severed wedding ring quite symbolic of todays divorce prone society. It strange to see tarnished, scratched jewelry in a shot like this but I though it conveyed the sense of time having passed before the cut. A quick search on Getty reviled nothing like this in their collection so I'm thinking these shots could also be a good addition to their library.

That was then, this is now.
The duo in the linked video is "The Swell Season." The song is "Low Rising" on their "Strict Joy" album. I learned of this awesome band from one of Jason?s contacts, blue i's'. Thank you, Amy!
This is my wife of 23 years (honeymoon photo in the comments), Linda and I at Sea World in Orlando Florida in April, 2004. As I searched for photos of us together, it came as little surprise that I have very few. I don't think I have one of us together in the past 5 years. I guess two people would actually have to be together to be photographed together. But we're not. We are not together, physically, often. And as the video so well depicts, when we are together, it's dreary, to say the least.
The vacation to Orlando was the last time we were on vacation together and that was seven years ago. I won't air too much of our dirty laundry here, but as I have shared a bit with you here and with some of you in flickrmail, the sad reality is that my marriage currently sucks. It has sucked for quite some time, too. We both have our flaws, and, apparently haven't cared enough to do anything about our relationship. Or, the things that we have tried haven't worked. And yes, we've tried couple counseling years ago and I have read my share of books about marriage and divorce.
When I tell "my side" of the story, nearly everybody tells me that I should get a divorce. But divorce isn't necessarily the answer. Many divorces are extremely painful and ugly.
What does Linda think? I have no idea. We don?t talk about it.
Maybe we should.
Linda does not view any of my stuff on flickr. I almost wish that she would. I know it seems cowardly and impersonal, but via e-mail, I sent the link to this video along with the lyrics to her personal e-mail account. My guess is that she will watch the video and may read the lyrics and never bring it up to me.
The Swell Season: Low Rising
I wanna sit you down and talk
I wanna pull back the veils
And find out what it is I?ve done wrong
I wanna tear these curtains down
I want you to meet me somewhere
Tonight in this old tourist town
And we?ll go
Low rising
´Cause we?ve gotta come up
We?ve gotta come up
Low rising
´Cause I fear we?ve had enough
Low rising
´Cause there?s no further for us to fall
Low rising
Oh for the love of you
I wanna take you to the rock
I wanna jump right in
And see what that big ocean?s got
I wanna turn this thing around
I wanna drink with you
All night till we both fall down
Till we go
Low rising
Cause we?ve gotta come up
We?ve gotta come up
Low rising
´Cause there?s no further for us to fall
Low rising
And I fear we?ve had enough
Low rising
Oh for the love of you
Low rising
Cause we?ve gotta come up
We?ve gotta come up
Low rising
And I fear we?ve had enough
Low rising
´Cause there?s no further for us to fall
Low Rising
Oh for the love of you
For the love of you
Low rising low rising
I wanna sit you down and talk
I wanna sit you down and talk about it now

?Father's hands are lined with dirt From long days in the field??
Too Bad: Nickelback Silver Side Up
I can?t say that I can relate to the elemental theme of a parent leaving- calling from time to time. But I think one of the messages in this is that sometimes people (in this example) make decisions about and for you based on what they think is best for you? and it really rarely is. Sometimes a parent leaves because they think they are not a good parent or husband- but that?s not what is best or what anyone else. Those kinds of miscommunications have plagued my life and that of many others.
Musically this really is a fun driving and singing song- it always gets my blood pumping!
*** Artist Notes ***
Hard work shown by the dirt of one?s hands: something my father would say.
Lyrics:
Father's hands are lined with dirt
From long days in the field
And mother's hands are serving meals
In a cafe on Main Street
With mouths to feed
Just trying to keep clothing on our backs
And all I hear about
is how it's so bad, it's so bad
It's too bad, it's stupid
It's Too late, it's so wrong, so long
It's too bad that we had no time to rewind
Let's walk, let's talk
You left without saying goodbye
Although I'm sure you tried
You call and ask from time to time
To make sure we're alive
But you weren't there
Right when I needed you the most.
And now I dream about it...
How it's so bad... and how it's so bad
It's too bad, it's stupid,
It's too late, it's so wrong, so long
It's too bad we had no time to rewind
Let's walk, let's talk
It's too bad, it's stupid,
It's too late, it's so wrong, so long
It's too bad that we had no time to rewind
Let's walk, let's talk
Father's hands are lined with guilt
For tearing us apart
Guess it turned out in the end
Just look at where we are
We made it out... we still got clothing on our backs
And now I scream about it... and how it's so bad, it's so bad
It's too bad, it's stupid
It's too late, it's so wrong, so long
It's too bad that we had no time to rewind
Let's walk, let's talk
It's too bad, too bad
Too late, so wrong, so long
It's too bad that we had no time to rewind
Let's walk, let's talk
Long time... let's walk... let's talk

But we made it! We were actually pretty unified. It was a pretty quick trip too and they amazingly had all the parts to reconfigure my free-standing wardrobe.
