This is the line to get to the Cake Boss shop, Carlo's City Hall Bakery, on 10 AM, on a Friday morning. What in the hell? Hoboken, NJ, 08/20/10.

This roof-boss beautifully depicts the Murder of Thomas Becket in 1170. The three knights assassinating Thomas all wear typical mid-14th century English armour, e.g. bascinets with a camail attached by vervelles, complete plate armour covering the limbs and tight surcoats with a loosely flowing skirt (instead of the later more tight-fitting jupon). They probably wear a coat-of-plates underneath their surcoats; no sign of a massive breastplate can be found yet, which would become very popular after the 1360s.
Unfortunately, during the 1970s, these bosses have been repainted in an inconsiderable style compared to the authentic polychromy. The use of 14th century pigments would have made this boss look less harsh colourwise.
Compare this picture with the contemporary effigy of Piers de Grandisson (+1358) in Hereford Cathedral: www.flickr.com/photos/roelipilami/1615772153/in/set-72157...
A big thank you to Katrien Steyaert for taking the picture.
