Vancouver Skyline, 1989

Vancouver Skyline, 1989

When I was digging up old transparencies the other night, I came across this one that I shot shortly after moving to Vancouver. Likely October or November, 1989, from Lonsdale Quay in North Vancouver. Really hit home how much the city has changed in the interceding 20 and a bit years. Look in the lower right hand corner, the Marine Building is still on the Waterfront! Lots of empty spaces that have since been filled in the skyline and, of course, just out of frame to the right is Coal Harbour which was still railyards at this time. Now, it's all 20+ story towers.

Most surprising to me is to recall that the HSBC Building was ever even visible in the skyline, it's well hidden now and doesn't even show up in the newer shot.

Click through to the next shot for a shot taken tonight, July 27, 2010, from nearly the same location.

Mamiya RB67 on a wooden Tripod at sunset

Mamiya RB67 on a wooden Tripod at sunset

While I can't find any but a couple discards from the transparencies I shot _with_ this camera on that night, here's a shot of the camera itself, all aglow on the home team dugout roof of Henderson Stadium back on Canada Day in 1986. Canada got Trounced by the visiting South Koreans in an exhibition baseball game, which I shot with the Mamiya. The wooden tripod was borrowed from my neighbour, Nels Kloppenberg, who got me into photography in the first place (being tired of my putting various balls and pucks through his windows as he was).

The camera was borrowed from The Slide Shop, a small custom lab where I worked after school manning the counter, running E6 film in a Jobo and printing contact sheets. Evenings and weekends, they let me have the run of the place and I cut my teeth printing Black and White and Cibachromes.

Damn, I miss Cibachrome. Have a few prints still that, at 20+ years old, still beat anything since hands down.

While the 6x7 transparencies of this game and the Fireworks display following are long since lost to the mists of time, I did stumble across this single 35mm transparency of the game.

The score, as I recall, was not flattering for our side.

Fujichrome 400 (1986 vintage) taken with a Contax 159mm and Zeiss 100mm f/3.5.

I certainly wish I had the 6x7 trannies still. I did a 16"x20" Cibachrome of a shot from this game that was warm and glowing in a way that I can still remember nearly 25 years later. Was for the Stadium, I'll have to check next time I'm back in Lethbridge and see if it's still hanging in the concourse.

Not the best shot, I did have some without wires but not sure where the transparencies went, probably I never got them back from the magazine. At the ripe age of 15, I was already freelancing. In this case, on assignment for Lethbridge Magazine (Amazingly, still in publication today). They gave me a lot of opportunities and, while the pay was rather low, for a kid in high school, it was more than enough to keep me in film and paper so I was happy.

Taken from atop the home team dugout at Henderson Stadium during an exhibition team between the Canadian National Baseball team and South Korea, at the time a mighty powerhouse. As I recall, the game was rather embarassing on the scoreboard. I wish I could find the transparencies I shot at the game itself, with the Mamiya 250. Baseball looks very good on 6x7. All shot on a fabulous wooden tripod I borrowed from my neighbour.

The camera was borrowed as well, from the custom lab I worked at after school. That was another huge break, they let me go in on weekends and evenings and use the lab as much and as long as I liked. Never had to pay for chemistry, only paper and film. It was a great help in my development as a photographer. Sadly, they're long since gone, even before digital, and I've long since lost contact with the owners.

This was shot on Kodak Ektrachrome 64T (tungsten) in 6x7 with a Mamiya RB67. I believe with a 127mm lens but, it might've been a 150 (it was a long, long time ago).

Which is a rather long and rambling way to say that I just wanted to upload a medium format fireworks shot so as to show some people who've been asking how film actually reproduces fireworks so much better than film (not the highlights are highlights but, not blown).

With any luck, I'll get some excellent results with the Linhof this week as well, although I may chicken out and shoot with the Rolleiflex on Wednesday. Fumbling with the maddening Rollex back on the Linhof in the dark seems very much not the type of thing one does for fun and, it does weigh as much as a large dog. A large dog with lots of sharp corners! :P

The "Wurstfest" is the annual sausage and beer festival in New Braunfels, Texas--a town that was settled by Germans and even in the late '60s was still a largely German town before being engulfed by the sprawl of San Antonio. My grandmother lived there for decades. Nowadays, the "German" elements there are mostly bogus, like the fake Bavarian half-timber buildings put up to cater to tourists' expectations.

Sally on the "Įguila Azteca", Mexico, 1969 (1)

The "Aztec Eagle" was a passenger train that ran from Nuevo Laredo to Mexico City. In those days, a second-class coach ticket cost about $5 for the 700 mile trip.

My former wife dressed for the trip--rather inappropriately, as it turned out--and caused quite a stir. But how could you not have been in love?
